Forests are spaces and can be described in architectural terms, their performance can be judged functionally, economically and emotionally. As a spectator I judge them mostly emotionally, with the eye of an architect. Forests always have a floor and a ceiling. Forests always have a depth and a density. As Ishigami has described, a forest is a collection of micro-spaces, created by its own elements.

Anyway, I am confused by the classic dichotomy of Nature and Culture. Our culture has created regulated terretories, mostly called National Parks, of which hardly any are of what I would call natural: not managed by humans for functional, economic or emotional purposes. The rest ist not nature, it is as much a designed and controlled space as are our cities or houses. And as in cities nature has found niches or ways to coexist even though it is a cultivated environment.

And now, on the other hand, there is a trend in architecture to search for a new symbiosis of architecture and nature. A "learning from forests" which Ishigami surely did.

But what if we could abandon this dichotomy alltogether? Do we really need to enclose parts of our landscape to protect us from ourselves? Can we not look at all the surface we inhabit in a coherent way? How would we have to adjust our judgement to make it work, again functionally, economically and emotionally?

vis, croatia
Annualy I spent a week with old friends, friends that got spread all over Europe, to find a chance to do what they want to do and learned. And it is inspiring each year to hear how their understanding of the world, and their way of survival in it, has changed and developed. In some way we all have to sell something. So I recommend you to look at Porcella to buy food with a background and a good conciousness. Or to contact this guys in case you want to feel fire in winter, webpage soon to be updated. Or, if you want to be cared for go here. Enough of advertising.

We went to Vis in Croatia. I catched my first Octopus with my bare hands and still feel its hands clenching mine in agony, and a bad conciousness. But we ate it all. And there are some houses on the island, done so rough and impulsive that the glow of beauty in the late summer sun. They remind me that houses are, whatever else they might be, but just a frame and life in it and around it is the picture.

fondation bellet, foyer du servan, lausanne
Our proposal for the invited competiton for the Foyer du Servan in Lausanne unfortunately didn't make it to the finals. A pity: I liked it and I liked the challenge of a complex program and a demanding site and surrounding.

cap corse I
we were told that at one point emigrants returned to cap corse from the Americas bringing with them new life standards and the wealth to realize them at the home they once left. in one we had the chance to spend some nights and we enjoyed it. it is a neoclassical villa, italian style, renovated and cared for by a charming french lady. find the plan that we approximated after our stay. the spaces were nice and calm, the openings upright and precise.

the wings at the side 3 square rooms with 3,6m length. the central wing 4,8m wide. notice the weak points in the load bearing walls that allow to change openings easily, otherwise they are used as open or closed shelves.

the lower private floor living room facing the garden.
